East Africa Safaris, Tours and trips to Africa most especially those in the East Africa rift valley countries are called or nicknamed Safaris! But do we actually know the Genesis of the word Safari or perhaps what Safari means??

Could it be the feel of the animals most especially the Lions "King of the Jungle" that mostly give the word its meaning or the Might African Elephants. Is it the wildebeests of The Masai Mara or the Serengeti or Mountain Kilimanjaro. Or could it be the Disney animation The Lion King that explains what actually Safari is.

Well one might consider all the above but the word safari actually originates from the Swahili word "safara" which means to travel. its funny when you think about in context, if i say African Safari, i could mean African Travel. safari trips could mean Travel Trips. Fast forward, safari was adopted into English in the mid-19th century which revolutionized it to refer to an expedition to observe or hunt animals in their natural habitant specifically in East Africa.

Due to preservation and animal laws, hunting of animals has hugely been discouraged and hurting trips have widely been banned. Now safaris are commonly associated with Wildlife viewing and photography tours, Gorilla and Chimpanzee Trekking and Tracking. Examples of Safaris;

  1. Game Drives; these you drive through a National park like Masai Mara, Murchison Falls, Serengeti or Akagera in a 4x4 vehicle to spot wildlife in the wild.

  2. Walking Safaris; for a more intimate experience, walking safaris allow you to explore the wilderness on foot, guided by an experienced ranger obviously.

  3. Boat Safaris; These happen on Rivers and lakes giving a whole new perspective on wildlife watching. its done in Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda.

  4. Balloon Safaris; these are literally safaris in the air giving breathtaking views offering an aerial perspective of the Landscape and wildlife. the Serengeti and Maasai Mara are popular spots.

  5. Gorilla Trekking; this is a whole new kind of safaris. this happens in the middle of Forests to see the Endangered Mountain Gorillas. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National park and Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are prime locations for this safari.
